Different regions have different economic status. When I was in college (20 years), one girl from north said that women who have baby in the first month (zuo yue zi) can eat eggs every day during the "Yue Zi", and I was so surprised too, because in my home town, women eat probably 2 chichens every day when they "Zuo Yue Zi". And I never really like egg when I was little, I ate fish every day almost. People like us from South have lots of more food to choose, doesn't mean every people have that choice. Even I am from rural area, I am never crazy about some food, because you can eat a lot of different things occassionally .
But in the rural area, eggs were not rare, we didn't need use "Liang Pian" to buy things. I remembered that in the early 80s, when my brothers got admission to universities, many neighbors sent us eggs to congratulate us. There were about 300 eggs maybe in one room, also other things. We also could buy pork as much as we wanted as long as you had cash, the butchers killed two to three pigs per day for people to buy. Nothing was limited to volume or amount in my memory. That was for people in the city.
