也听到这个消息了。
有意思的是,NPR 采访的专家点评说,(my paraphrase here), above everything
else, this is a marketing move, because more and more colleges and
universities are using ACT now. Also, some 800 of the roughly 3,000 colleges
and universities in America make SAT or ACT submissions optional in college
application.
Right, it is a business for College Board, and a big money making one.

from NYT:
Eddie New York
To people who are worried about the writing section becoming optional—as
long as there exists the option to take it, it will be effectively required
for admission to top schools. It's no different than a college having an
optional application essay; not taking the time to write that essay
certainly won't be looked favorably upon by admissions officers. All that's
going to happen with the essay is that mediocre students are going to skip
it out of laziness, while high-achievers or students with an interest in top
colleges are still going to take it. This change is just making the SAT
more painless for the students who already don't care.
