Happy New Year to you, too! Lately I've been hanging out around
the Black Sea a lot, musically speaking, where I came across Cem
Adrian, a Turkish singer/song writer with a truly unique voice.
According to Wikipedia, "he is known for his ability to sing from
bass to soprano, as his vocal cords are three times the length of an
average person's." Talk about a special gift from God, Allah, or
whomever!
Here's Cem Adrian performing the immortal "Sari Gelin":

Here are a couple more pieces of musical gems from that
region. First, allow me to bring you, once again, "the voice
of Georgia," Hamlet Gonashvili:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5bzmssDePg
Now, a piece of old-fashioned Turkish music known as
"Amar Andalus." This is the best version I can find on
YouTube. It's not complete, but enough to give you
more than just a glimpse. Besides, that belly dancer is
not bad at all!

Gee, BLACK SEA odyssey...........More details, please.
Also, amazed that your musical exploration has expanded into Turkey.
We discussed a little bit about Greek music before, but I still have a hard
time to figure out how ancient Greek culture and its orthodox religious
tradition influenced its music....
Turkey, although bordered with Greece, is a complete different territory, a
country celebrating East and West civilization, a place mixed with Muslim
and Christian culture heritage.
I feel thrilled to take a peek on Turkey music through your detailed,
thoughtful narrative.
Great job you have done to enrich our musical fellowship, NWwolf.

Just one easy and quick comment from my side.

Hee hee, there's really not much detail to speak of. World music is
where my heart and soul have been over the past 20 years or so, and
the Middle East has always been on the radar screen. Unfortunately, I
know very little about the Middle Eastern musical tradition. Nonetheless,
the dazzling array of different rhythms and the seemingly infinite divisions
of the musical notes in Middle Eastern music is absolutely fascinating even
for a musical layman like me. As I always say, I really don't know much
about music, but I sure as heck know what I like.
Here's a Turkish lullaby that I think I posted on this board once before,
but
it is worth repeating since we are hanging out in Turkey:

Moving on to the eastern shore of the Black Sea, here's one from Azerbaijan:

http://74.53.4.74/article_t/LeisureTime/109193.html

《Story of the Weeping Camel》

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lj5PXTEDjKI

babylon
