Probably an odd place to rant about this but I just had to let it out. Sorry
for wasting your time ha. So, after reading the first two chapters of Henry
Kissinger's On China I was feeling utterly proud of our culture, philosophy
, pragmatism and superior analytic ability. In a lazy attempt to refresh my
knowledge on Chinese history I started the movie 战国 on hulu. OMG, what a
culture trash!!! How could this absurd, moronical and twisted movie be
allowed to come into existence, let alone being exported as a representation
of Chinese history is completely beyond my comprehension! The movie reminds
me of an equally bizarre 满城尽带黄金甲. Although in the latter I was at
least rewarded with plenty exposure to 巩俐's mammaries; while the former
only made me wanna slap 孙红雷 on the face for totally destroying the image
of 孙子.
Anyhoo, an excerpt from On China pondering why China had little interest in
converting remote barbarians such as Europeans to Chinese way even at the
peak of its technological advance (think 郑和下西洋) really cracks me up :
"The Chinese Emperors felt it was impractical to contemplate influencing
countries that nature had given the misfortune of locating at such a great
distance from China. In the Chinese version of exceptionalism, China did not
export its ideas but let others come to seek them. Neighboring peoples, the
Chinese believed, benefited from contact with China and civilization so
long as they acknowledge the suzerainty of the Chinese Government."
btw, just found out a Chinese student in my school is a lala (or as my
colleague puts it "a gay lady" LOL). I've only seen her once and had
wondered coz she is like super T. What are the odds!
