This is the general rule of thumb. If you don't have debt and you can pay 20%
down payment, your highest affordable house is 4 times your total house
income, which is about 4*50K/yr (you and your wife, suppose ur wife gets
5k/yr) = 200k. If you have small amount of debt and you can pay only 5-10%
down payment, your highest affordable house is 3 times your total house
income, which is about 150k/yr. 270k house is too much for you at this moment.
