After the 1st on-site, the Director of Computational Biology sent me a very
welcoming email and asked me what my salary and startup requirements are.
I sent an email and asked him what his estimated ball park was. He said a
couple of postdoc and graduate students are all I need for the startup,
and the salaries should be 10% more than my current one.
I said I would take a little time to get this to him. And then I said I
recall that he would get some lab space to do sequencing, if I can get some
bench space also, because one of my grants requires to do some genomics
assays followed by Bioinformatics analysis.
He then dropped out of the conversation. Is it because this is a 100% dry
position so he won't consider me for the next round anymore? Is there any
need for me to send him another email with lists of salaries/startup needs
etc? The 2nd on-site candidate will be determined this month some time.

strange. But since he asked both orally and in written, I had to answer...

What is the purpose to ask everyone to provide startup budgets, before the
2nd on-site names are decided?

onsite的时候，要多少startup，要多达的lab space，还有equipment list，都是问过
了的，我以为这是面试必要的内容呢。不过mm手里那么多钱，还怕什么，东家不要西家
还抢哪。

系里会综合讨论一下，看看系里是否能满足大部分人的大部分要求。
如果有个别候选人要的明显比其他人都高很多而且态度很坚决的话，
如果其他候选人的在第一轮面试里看起来差不多的话，是有可能会
把这个踢出去。但是我觉得你要的并不过分。
但是，并不是钱要得越少就希望越高的。系里是要综合产出考虑的。
要得太少的人系里会觉得那个人根本就不懂得如何运行一个实验室，
反而会成为一个负面因素。
对于你这个例子，你可以给他发一个list, 但是不要太着急听回应。
另外，我建议你现在就开始疯狂的使用你那些不能带走的钱。那些
能带走的先省着。

You can check in the center whether other PIs have wet lab. If yes, you are
OK, if not, it could be a problem

The other two hires are Computer Science guys, so no wet lab...but since the
tenure-line home department is different from the center, maybe the home
department (once identified) can help with this?
