Is it possible to convert a air source heat pump to a open loop ground
source one? Can this be done by, for example, modifying the outdoor unit and
use groundwater to cool/heat the coil instead of air.

Where do you live?
What is the outside temp in summer and winter?
I do not suggest open loop unless you happen to live next to a very deep and
large lake or something like that.
Closed verticle loop should be the best setup for most part of US.
Provide more detail I can maybe help you more.
But here is one thing I learned working for a large company in Seattle years
ago, you can make anything fly if you put a large enough engine on it (if
money is no object, anything is possible). But I am guess

我在南方。冬天不很冷。夏天比较热。但是不知到为什么冬天电费高得出奇。
open loop我的想法是挖两个20多尺的井，这个应该不是很难，自己挖就行了。我觉得主要开销就是把condenser换成coaxial condenser，在弄个水泵抽井水。不知道5吨的coaxial condenser大致要多少钱？
下面这个网页里面有一个17.5 kw的coaxial condenser，$352。这个是不是大致相当于5 ton?

似乎Air handler是需要根condenser匹配的。用water cooling的condenser是不是可以通过调节流速来匹配air handler?
