Sorry for inputting in Chinese.
Can anyone help me with my question? How much earnest money (or percentage
of the sales price) one should put at signing a house purchase contract? My
agent suggests 5%. Isn't that too much? I am in Massachusetts. Thanks.

1% or 2% is normal
but some people put down more earnest money to show they are serious about
their offers

纽约签binder的时候$500,offer接受后签正式合同时10%，支票写给对方律师

其实没有硬性规定
主要是表面你的诚意，只要付你认为serious的money就行
我们付了3%，大约1万多
一个同事只付了$1000，他认为一千刀对他来说已经很serious了

我的理解是，既然合同已经签了，多放earnest money对买方并没什么好处。它对买方
只是个约束，因为买方若是反悔可能会失去这些钱。钱越多，对买方约束越大。

yes.don't put too much. 1000~2000$ enought. somtimes, if you put more, you
might feel bad and be easy to emotional. for example, during the time, you
might see a better house, you can loose these earnest money.
