For bills, once you pay them, you can throw it away. eg. utility bill. If you
own a house, you need to save them for at least a year. It is useful when you
sell the house.
For bank statements, you need to save at least 3 years and canceled checks for
3 years. The reason is when IRS audits you, you need to bring the proof for
your payment which is tax deductable. Since the bank statement doesn't say
which check pays to whom, you also need canceled check.
