I am trying to open a new program. the dean supports it, but a senior
powerful professor in the dept does not. it has to go through the dept first
. do you think if it is advisable to argue/fight with the powerful professor
(and his followers), or just back off?
it is definitely a good program but has some conflict of interest with some
faculty. it might take students away from them.

Yes, I am tenured. But i am outnumbered. Not sure how much influence the
dean generally has on the dept.

开个新program其实挺麻烦的，关键是不是可持续，
如果过几年，没人学，得不偿失。
老教授的意见要斟酌，毕竟以后这个program的成
功需要大家的帮衬。
看看这个新的东西能给他们带来什么益处，然后把
大家都拉上船。如果得不到足够的支持，即使现在
在系主任的支持下霸王硬上弓，以后也会有麻烦。

Thanks. You are absolutely right. This new program will bring them no
benefit by competing for students. their enrollment is already dropping much
. I will not get their support for sure. it will benefit students a lot
though.

It is ok to fight for what you believe in as long as you understand the loss
and reward of your action.
Perhaps you may start by asking yourself what exactly you are set to gain
through ruining any relationship you might or might not have with a fellow
faculty member in your department.

Thanks a lot for your advice. I am thinking over your replies. they are very
helpful.
i am trying to achieve a balance between "not too weak" (especially for a
minority) and "not too arrogant". the current situation is they are assuming
absolute control. that's not fair at all. if i back off this time, probably
i won't have much say in anything later.
my friend already told me "not this pushy" even though i am doing something
right. it is really a tough decision.
