Keeping mouth shut when someone else is talking about miles/point
I was out dinner tonight and at the next table seated a few young man and
women.
As they were discussing financing a new car purchase, one of them started
explaining to the rest of the group about how to get good credit scores and
how responsible use of credit cards can yield good rewards, etc things that
all of us here on FT will agree
But then he started talking how he use reward points...
I have to try quite hard to keep myself from turning to the side and explain
to the group that there are better use of MR points than redeeming an iPod
Touch
Grrrrr...

People who buy merchandise on points are what make the rewards systems
profitable.
People who take out 0% teaser credit card offers and then can't pay them
back are what make those offers profitable.
People who buy lottery tickets help pay for schools and hospitals.
Don't disparage these people; they make life better for you and me.

Paying a grand total of $190 in taxes and fees for our flights to Europe got
my wife on board and bragging to her friends. She's not quite to where she'
ll start churning on her own, yet, but she's coming around.
Then, we had dinner with one of her friends who has stellar credit (800+).
When she learned about my churning, she started scolding me about how
inquiries ding your credit rating. What's the point of having good credit if
you aren't going to use it? No point in telling her that my score has gone
up this year despite 26 inquiries (11 reporting) on eight new cards and a
new car loan.

Me- Why don't you come to visit me in New Orleans?
Friend- Great, but I don't have any money for plane tickets.
Me- Well, if you sign up for this British Airways card, you will get enough
points to fly roundtrip Dallas-New Orleans on AA 9 times with a few points
left over.
Friend- OK.
Me (months later)- So did you get the credit card yet?
Friend- No.

i also no longer try too hard to get people into the game. in the beginning,
i couldn't believe how much i could benefit from this and wanted to share
it with everyone.
like someone else mentioned upthread, there are tons of people who think
they know it all already. either that or they don't understand so they would
rather just turn a blind eye to what's out there.
nowadays, i usually just keep my mouth shut, not to keep the deal alive, but
so that i don't feel like i'm a used car salesman when i'm really
explaining for their benefit when they don't really want to listen.
occasionally someone will come up to me to ask, and for them, i take the
time to explain.
it's taken quite some time but my SO has also started to believe a bit more
and more with every trip.
i'm curious to know how many people each of you know in your personal life
that is as much a miles junkie as you are. so far for me, none. the closest
person loves collecting thankyou points because they can be used for
anything. to her credit, she uses it for travel in combination with the TY
premier card for a bit more of a return.
