Astrophysics PhDs had, are having, and will have quite some difficulties
finding real jobs. Since the tenure track positions are so few. This year
is a better year, but about 20 or so only. If you are so into science and
couldn't find a tenure track for now, definitely continue for a next postdoc
, in a place like CFA or STScI or NRAO, so you'll have more connections and
get the next term.
That said, many of my classmates from undergrad came to the states, started
as an astrophysics phd, and moved to other fields. Two are on the street
right now. It did take A LOT of effort if you want to end up on the street.
Earlier years it might be enough to get a quant job if you are a phd from a
top-notch school. Now prob you need to pack yourself with more financial
engineering background.
