AP in an OK program in a large public university. Going up for tenure soon.
In our U, the candidate can provide a list of potential letter writers for
the committee to pick. However, we are advised against contacting these
people.
My question is: if all I do is to email a potential writer and ask him/her
whether or not he/she is willing to write the letter, would that be
considered unethical? I don't intend to "influence" opinions, but I'd like
to not bring up someone's name if I know he/she is not interested.
Thanks in advance for any advice from senior fellows around here.
