I am trying to decide whether I should join a VC-funded startup or become a
faculty. The startup was built upon a technology from my work, and I have
been offered a director position. I am currently working as a scientist in a
hot field with a powerful and rising star professor at a top university. I
have 40 publications, with 10 of them being in the top tier, such as Nature
series. I did not officially start job hunting yet, but have received
several on-site invitations, and will very likely get an assistant professor
position at a top university. Many people told me to make a decision based
on what I love from my heart. I love becoming a professor, have been
preparing this for over 10 years, and knows the next 10-15 papers to write
and all the details of how to be successful in academics. Much of them must
be devoted to the training I received from my boss. However, I also feel
that a major reason for my past achievement is due to the top-tier
collaborators. Working for this startup, I will collaborate more with this
group of world-leading professors and gain more experience on the management
, product, and market. Startup is always risky. I will have continuing
publications for the next one year or so, so I might still be able to get
back to the market even if I fail. In summary, I know that I can be
successful in academics because I have the passion, knowledge and be
prepared. For the startup, I will continue working with a group of world
leaders, both in academics and commercials. Any suggestions on the pro and
cons on the selection?
