I heard that the piano certificate obtained in middle school years can't be used towards college application. The teacher says it's best to take level 10 test at 9th grade. Is that true? The CM test probably doesn't weigh much in college admission though.

The college application asks what the students achieve during high school. It's very awkward if you put down the awards/achievement won in middle school on the application. There're too many students have leve10/panel certificate that it won't standout at all. But if the student won regional award, perform in Carneige Hall, then college admission officers will raise their eyebrows and view him/her a talent, just as northbeach has pointed out earlier. The student still should put down practicing piano 1 or 2 hours each day and have CM on the applicaiton. This let college know that the student also spend time doing other activities while maintaining a good GPA. This is stronger than a student who do nothing else but only homework or just day-dreaming to achieve the same GPA.
be much

It makes perfect sense. So pushing kiddo to start at very young age actually becomes disadvantage for college application, unless he/she is very talented and can win a lot of awards.
Carneige and spend time doing other activities while maintaining a good GPA. This is stronger than a student who do nothing else but only homework or just day- dreaming to achieve the same GPA.

No, it's NOT a disadvantage. If a student start very young and continue thru HS school, it shows the kid is really passionate about his/her interest even though he/she is not outstanding at it. If your kid is still young, stop thinking about how to impress the college admin. That's the last thing you want to worry about. Help the kid find out what they enjoy to do. If they enjoy it, they'll do it good and take it long.
actually

it depends. some gift cards used to work, some don't. eg, earlier this year, you could buy staples gc via chase ultimate rewards mall and get 5 points / dollar if you used ink, you could earn 10 points /dollar
