I have been struggling on whether I should seek my faculty dream for a long
time. I am currently a director in a very promising startup company, founded
by several famous academic and industrial leaders in a cutting-edge field.
The company was built upon some technology I created. I could become
financial freedom in a few years if the company succeed, which is highly
likely. However, I feel that it is just a job, and I have started to lose my
passion. I have seen many passionate friends become lost after years of
industrial jobs, and I am afraid that I am following them.
I just wish that I could freely work on exiting research topics, present
these findings in top conferences, and guide students. I feel that I would
be very satisfied with that kind of life. However, I am also very hesitated
to seek it. My references are all extremely powerful professors. This
startup is their dream and it is my responsibility to achieve this dream. I
am also very hesitated to ask my family to move.
I am working in a hot field with >50 papers in top journals and >2000
citations. I have also earned my reputation through tens of invited talks
per year.
Maybe an idea situation is to help the company go IPO, become financial
freedom, and then go fullfill my dream. However it might take a few years. I
will still have papers coming out for one or two years, and then my
publications will drop because the company does not want to make
publications. Will I be totally out of the game if I keep working in the
company for 2-3 years?

只见身影一晃，老者竟一下横跨数十丈距离，到了血魄面前
血魄一惊，身形急忙倒射垩出去。
旁边两只合体傀儡顿时一动，一个一张弓，当即“嗤嗤”声大响，无数金芒暴射而
出。
另一头傀儡手中长枪一抖，寒光一闪，枪头顿时幻化出一朵直径丈许的蓝色巨花，
迎头向老者一罩而下。
此枪花看似晶莹异常，但方一压下，一股奇寒之气就先一卷而下，让老者附近虚空
为之一凝，似乎要直接冻结住一般。
而这时那些金芒则从四面八方的激垩射而至。
两头傀儡的配合，竟近似天衣无缝一般。
高大老者一声冷哼，身上只是一层赤色电弧一闪，就将附近寒气撕裂而开，哪些看
似厉害无比的金芒一射到近前处，同样被电弧轻易弹开。
老者一只手掌同时迎着巨花虚空一抓。
“砰”的一声，蓝色巨花骤然消失，一只蓝色枪头竟被老者五指如钩的轻易抓在了
手心中。
那名持枪傀儡双臂猛然一颤，就想将长枪从对方手中抽出，但此兵器却仿佛生根本
的不动一下。
倒是那名持弓傀儡目中晶光闪动，一股惊人气息从身上爆发而出，手中具弓光芒大
放后，一道金色长惊虹发出尖鸣的激垩射而出，直奔老者一卷而来。
高大老者哈哈一笑，只是冲着飞来金虹张口一吹，一团赤红雷火喷出迎风一涨后，
立化为了水缸般大小。
“轰”的一声后，两者一接触后爆裂而开。
赤红电光骤然一涨后，就将金芒吞噬其中，并且一个滚滚的反卷而去就准确无比的
击中了持弓傀儡，将其化为了灰烬。
至于那持枪的合体傀儡，也被天空中蓦然出现的一只赤色大手拍中，当场化为了一
堆破烂。
高大老者身形再一个晃动后，就紧跟血魄的出现在了近在咫尺的地方，并将一只大
手冲此女不客气的一伸而出：
“小丫头，现在将钥匙和宝物交出来我一会儿还能给你一个痛快，否则的话，嘿嘿
……”
高大老者一边说着一边面露狰狞之色来。
“前辈能进入此地，身上肯定也有天鼎宫钥匙，何必非要贪图晚辈身上之物。”血
魄脸色苍白异常，缓缓倒退的说道。
“哼，你以为我不知道，天鼎宫中的一些特殊地方是需要相关钥匙才能进去的。本
老祖身上只有一把仿制钥匙，自然要多搜刮一些其他钥匙以作备用的。既然你不愿意主
动交出来，就不要怨本老祖辣手了。”高大老者一见血魄仍然不肯屈从的模样，当即冷
哼一声，探出手掌骤然一个翻转，五指一分的直接冲此女抓去。
看似普通通的一抓却让血魄只觉前后左右均都在对方五指笼罩之下，给其一种避无
可避的诡异感觉，当即心中大骇。
眼看老者五指微微一偏，就要将血魄肩头一把抓住的时候，此女上空波动一起，一
道晶光凭空现出，闪电般的直奔老者一卷而下。
此攻击来的毫无征兆，就算高大老者是成年多年的大乘老怪，也心中一惊的躲闪不
及。
“噗”的一声闷响老者探出手臂被晶光一卷而入后，当场化为七八截的凭空爆裂而
开，
不过高大老者自己却一个模糊后，出现在后方数十丈外的虚空中，并双目喷火的盯
着血魄上空一声厉喝：
“哪位道友在此，竟然施展此种手段暗算老夫。”
在说话的同时，老者断臂处蓦喷出一股血雾，无数血丝交织蠕动下，一条白嫩的崭
新手臂正在重新生出。
这种断肢重生的手段，对以血道功法为主的血天大陆修炼者来说，自然是轻而易举
的事情。
但老者这番喝问后，四下虚空却静悄悄一片，并未有人现身而出，只有血魄脸上表
情恢复了一些镇定，但脚步仍向后面慢慢退去。
高大老者见此情形，脸上当即阴沉似水了，再用一种恶毒眼光看了血魄一眼后，完
好手臂猛然一抬，冲此女飞快一点。
一声闷响。
一点赤芒从指尖处激垩射而出，一闪即逝后，没入虚空中不见了踪影。
下一刻，血魄身前丈许远处，轰鸣一响，赤芒凭空浮现，并一下化为尺许长的赤红
短梭，直奔血魄胸口一扎而去。
速度之快，几乎只是一个念之间的事情。
以血魄的修为，纵然想祭出防御宝物或者躲闪，却是来不及的事情。
她纵然一向冷静，也一下花容失色了。
就在这时，此女身前金光一闪，一个尺许高的金色小人一下显现而出，一条手臂略
微一挥，就将红短梭硬生生一崩而飞。
正是金童这只噬金虫王。
高大老者一见此景，瞳孔骤然一缩，同时面现一丝狐疑之色。
“阁下是什么人，与这小丫头是何关系？”老者眼珠转动两下后，蓦然问道。
金色小人目光冰冷的的盯着老者，面色木然，丝毫没有回答老者的意思，但一只小
手虚空一抓，当即附近嗤嗤声大响，一根根淡金色晶丝凭空浮现，仿佛一张巨网般的将
四周虚空全都笼罩其下。
高大老者见此，心中大怒：
“既然道友一心想战，老夫就来领教下阁下的神通如何了。”
话音刚落，老者单手一掐诀，体表顿时无数赤弧弹射而出，再一张口，一片银光席
卷而出，光芒一敛后，幻化出了一面古镜来。
此镜方一显现而出，表面光蒙蒙一闪，无数银色符文从中狂涌而出，又一声轰鸣的
化为一团团银色雷光。
“去”
高大老者一声低喝，袖子冲对面一抖，当即赤银两种雷光骤然交织一起，化为一团
直径里许的巨大雷云，气势汹汹的奔对面一压而去。
对面金色小人见此，面无表情的小手一抬，冲对面点了一下。
破空声大起，金色晶丝当即化为暴雨的向雷云激垩射而去。
只听的雷云中“噼啪”声大响，无数晶光在其中若隐若现，顷刻间工夫就被洞穿了
个千疮百孔，并在灵力流逝下，飞快的缩小起来。
高大老者几乎不能相信自己的眼睛，先前一击纵然不是他的压箱手段，但也绝对是
其持之依仗的大神通之一。
那面银色古镜可是一件玄天残宝，再结合自身修炼的赤雷，威能之大不知让多少对
手闻风丧胆过的，但现在竟然被对方这般轻描淡写的破掉了。
对方幻化的晶丝到底是何物，竟然如此犀利，并丝毫不惧自己的雷电神通。
不过就在老者骇然的瞬间，金色小人已经十指一抬，“嗤嗤”声一起。
高大老者只觉四周虚空一寒，密密麻麻的无形剑气凭空浮现，冲其激垩射而来。
老者脸色大变，不加思索的袖子一抖，一只青色木碗一飞而出，一个盘旋后就到了
头顶处，再滴溜溜一转后，就化为一层青色光幕的将其护在了里面。
同时老者另一只手一掐法决，背后雷光一现后，竟一下现出一头赤红巨蛟虚影。
此蛟方一现身而出，当即张牙舞爪的大口一张，一片赤红雷弧当即狂喷而出，化为
滚滚雷幕向四面八方狂劈而去。
“噗噗”声大响。
这些雷弧一接触四周无形剑气后，竟如同朽木般的纷纷被一斩而碎。
倒是那层青色光幕不知拥有何种玄机在其中，竟灵光一闪的将激垩射而至的无形剑
气真挡了下来。
但即使如此，高大老者也吓了一大跳，面色一白后，急忙单手一招，从储物镯中飞
出一柄弯曲异常的血色怪剑来。
老者一把将此剑抓在手中，张口就冲其喷出数团精血去。
精血一接触之下，当即被吸的一干二净。
怪剑当一个模糊后，竟一下扭曲的活了过来，化为一条不知名的血蒙蒙怪蛇。
高大老者一声阴笑后，就将手中怪蛇一抛而出。
只听得“嗖”的一声后，怪蛇一个翻滚后，一下没入虚空中不见了踪影。
而下一刻，金色小人附近处，突然一股血雾凭空冒出。
小人双目冷光一闪，当即两道晶光从中一卷而出，直接洞穿血雾而过，里面空荡荡
一片，似乎真的毫无一物的样子。
就在金色小人有些一怔的时候，眼前血雾却忽然滚滚一凝，出其不意的幻化成那条
血色怪蛇。
此蛇身子只是一个模糊后，蛇首就不知如何的狠狠咬在了小人肩头处。
远处老者目睹此景，顿时扬首狂笑起来：
“小辈，你死定了。此蛇就是血天十大毒虫之一的血芒蛇，就算你有金刚不坏之体
，片刻后也会化为一团污血的。”
“十大毒虫？很好吃吗？”金色小人看了一眼肩头处的怪蛇，忽然目露一丝奇怪之
色的首次开口了。
声音尖细异常，让人听了，竟有一种通体发寒的诡异感觉。
高大老者闻听此言，不禁一怔，但马上让其大惊失色的一幕出现了。
对面金色小人忽然手臂一动，一把抓住血芒蛇的七寸处，将其从肩头处硬生生撕扯
而下，再嘴巴一张，竟一口将蛇首咬了下来。

Given what lz said, I do not think a faculty position really interests lz. A
professor is not something as promising as the work lz described. If it is
not a Keng, then lz may have a wrong impression on faculty jobs.

If I am 牛, I will not ask this question here. I have been helping two new
faculty get their tenure and become famous. So far, the best time of my life
is when I am working a scientist in a top university. I was able to do any
work I like, and feel very proud in conference presentations.

What is wrong staying in industry? Many people get lost in their faculty
positions too. How many faculties publish useful papers and produce
influential work? It is just a job…

I do see a lot of grammar errors in my post, which were quickly typed in
using an iPhone. I admit that my English is relatively weak, but should not
be too bad for grant. I can use some editing service too.
I just feel that I was born for science, and easily get a lot of papers out.
I was continuously on the road for invited talks for several months when I
was working in academics. I missed those days. My current company is a
startup, and does not allow me to publish any findings. I also cancelled all
invited talks. Recently, due to ethic issues, I gave up a lot of awesome
publication opportunities.

I am lucky to work in a very exciting field with tons of extremely useful
data. I can easily pump out a lot of interesting and useful papers. I
mentored a high school student who did not know anything about computer. I
was able to guide him get exiting results in two months, and helped him get
national awards and accepted into all major ivy universities. With the data
in my hand, it is very easy to get exciting findings.
I admit that I do not like grant writing, which is probably the major reason
holding me become a faculty.

To be honest, I think you should stay in your company and try to accumulate
more data so you can easily get a Nobel Prize. Good luck.

If you really love science and doing research, faculty is a good job for you
. However, do not have a high expectation. There are a lot of ups and downs.
..I can guess what kind of data you are talking about. It is true it is easy
to publish papers in good journals now because people are not used to
processing such massive amount of data. This field can quickly become
crowded...Your writing is ok for grant application. I do not think you need
to worry about that. Hope it helps.

Most people focused on building tool. I have been focusing on finding,
especially findings useful in industry. Besides, I move on new types of data
every year. So far, I have been able to stay ahead of the game for a few
years.
Of course, there is always up and down. Same for academics and industry.
