You are not going to able to extract 100% of the energy from the wood ( a lot of them will just go out of chimney) If you have a lots of free wood you can burn, it is pretty nice. If you have to buy the pre-cut fire wood, I don't think it will save you any money. A pallet stove might be better. 收拾起来麻烦么?Depending what kind of wood you burn, most of them just have a little ash to sweep up, but you need to have someone to clean your chimney once a year.

If you live in well-forested areas, like New England, firewood come in handy and cheap - the price is not only lower than fossil fuels, but also much stabler. And take pride in reducing the States' dependence on foreign oil : )

Just off the top of my head. 1. The fireplace should not take air from the indoors, that is, it should have an in-take airway from outdoors. 2. Glass doors to keep exhaust from escaping the fireplace and room air from sucking into the fireplace. 3. The right damper size to control the airflow. 4. Better aerodynamic in flue to prevent sucking in cold air. The newer one might have more 1. Grate heaters. 2. Reflectors. 3. Catalytic features.
