My university, by all accounts, is a good university, not necessarily a top
university.
Recently we interviewed a candidate. He is from a top school with impressive
pedigree. He was asked why he wanted to come to work in our university. He
responded by saying that our university is a "very good" university, among
other things. I thought he was complimenting us by saying our university is
"very good" and didn't make much of it.
One senior faculty got very pissed off with this response. In the post-
interview meeting, he voiced his opinion about the candidate this way, "He
called our university a very good university. Fxxx you."
Um...
Is this an issue of language barrier? Or do we have inferior complex?
