I believe so. He visualized the dark scene, then
intentionally
underexposed by, about 2 stops I guess, to achieve this
effect.
Thinking a bit more than just getting the "correct"
exposure/composition
is a big step forward. Visualization is another. Once you
start thinking of these things systematically you are on a
different
level. I fully agree on Ozyman's compliments. Congrats
