Today I realized that I have to take my responsibility seriously. When I
was young, I could either mess up things without much consequence in the end
or make up for my mistakes later on. But now there are more and more things
for which I have only one chance to make it right. TJ admission is one of

在ebay上买了个小白，卖家list时候说是Mint Condition，照片上也很完美（但是照片
模糊）。结果收到一看，比fair condition还差。镜头里面有明显的灰，表面磨损严重
（原先列的照片太模糊，看不清楚，而且照片只把稍微好的一面照出来，差的那面没有
显示，差别非常大）。现在联系卖家，卖家同意return，但是要我出shipping。请问这
样该如何处理？应该通过ebay file "not as described"么？需要准备什么东西？
谢谢！
真是烦死了，弄了个这么差的镜头。这个卖家居然还是100% positive feedback

卖家也损失shipping

晕死了，那就是说，卖家可以尽情的在list里面欺骗，即使买家要退货，买家自己也得

differently, which high school would you recommend for your kid to attend in
order for him or her to become FAMOUS later in their lives?

TJ 高中的课程还是非常，非常困难的。对一般学生来说，无论你原来在初中是多么地
有能力，到了 TJ 有时候，你还会觉得脑子不够用。或早或晚，一个普通 TJ 学生会觉
得自己挺傻的。虽然你很有可能是某个科目的矫矫者，但请记住，在 TJ 会有个 479
名孩子和你几乎一样的聪明和好学。仅仅从数字的角度来看，当 480 个学生中的第一
名是不太容易的，尤其是在 TJ。还有一条貌似的＂缺点＂：TJ 有大约 55-65％ 的亚
裔学生。如果你害怕和他们竞争，或者害怕录取时遭受 AA 制的＂反向歧视＂（在条件
和 TJ 非亚裔的同学类似并且申请同样学校时），那请你三思而后行。
上 TJ 的优点：你会被和你一样精明能干的孩子包围着；你和他们对某些科目有共同的
兴趣。即使因为有这样惺惺相惜而且志趣相投的同学，在 TJ 混四年也值了。况且，
TJ 还有许多有趣的，其他高中没有的课程。比如，在第八堂课 TJ 有无数的课外活动
供你挑选。其次，如果你有兴趣做正儿八经的科学研究，TJ 真是你应该首选的地方。
TJ 的毕业生必须做一个高级研究项目 － 这是在 TJ 的文凭要求。许多学生在低年级
就早早地开干他们的高级研究项目，因为他们充足的兴趣，或者因为他们有自己的老师
，高校导师或在假期实习工作的机会。有些暑期的实习工作的机会是带薪的，可以在大

至于上什么样的大学，TJ 的毕业生有很多没有上顶尖学校，而是选择参加不错的弗吉
尼亚州的公立大学。其原因有两个：（1）家庭财务负担能力和（2）这些顶尖学校不可
能每年接受 100 个从 TJ 来的孩子。
例如：每年大约有80-90 TJ 的孩子申请麻省理工学院 （MIT）。但 MIT 不可能接受这
么多从同一所学校来的申请人，即使他们可能会同样的成功和优秀。况且，MIT 的录取
标准据说不是光看考试成绩。有情况表明，MIT 并非对所有学校的第一名感冒。MIT 似
乎用考试成绩来确定一个范围，然后考察 GPA 和 SAT 分数以外的其他定性因素。有时
候就是一个申请者的学习“态度”成为两个同样合格的学生之间的分水岭。MIT 有可能
更青睐那些正在自己推动自己学习，自己＂真诚＂热爱学习的学生。或许他们更喜欢自
身条件不完善的孩子但努力改善自己的孩子，而不喜欢从来就完美无缺，在高中顺风顺
水的孩子。
无论如何，有六个品质是任何录取官都希望看到的：

勤奋学习
主动出击
坚韧不拔
反应迅速
信仰坚定
大家也不用特意去推这些品质。有些东西家长推不来。孩子身上有，就偷偷笑吧。但在
TJ 混四年，可能就耳喧目染地学会了其中几样。信不信，可就由你了。

actually you did not answer that question in the article. at least it does
not convince me.
it looks to me the reason you gave is the school is very competitive so the
kid has to work hard to survive. to me, working hard is an approach, not a
goal, and more imprtantly, it should not be forced to. we see so many
examples that someone used to work hard and got lost when he finally found
he could live ok without working that hard.
and the fact does not support that the kids from that school coulbe be very
famous. I don't want my kid struggled for several years and ended as a
script writer.

IMHO, the point of going to TJ is NOT to become famous! That is the point I
want to explain in my old post.Mingling with like-minded students might be a
reason, depending on the student's preference.
If you want your kid to become famous by attending a specific school, go
ahead. No objection from me. But that is not my goal or James's goal.

Here is my final post in this thread:
There are all kinds of reasons one can justify a decision. Whether that
justification suits another person's standard or taste is another story. A
decision may be made by flipping a coin or by solving a multiple regression
problem. Once the decision is made, the right to second-guess that decision
does not rest on anyone's shoulder but that of the decision maker. That's
called deference.
Discussion about the validity of the decision should happen BEFORE the
decision is made and AMONG the stake-holders.

早先就恭喜过beida和扁豆，也知道TJ high是如何的难进。 不过看了扁豆的话，突然

我觉得这是你我转一圈过了30岁之后的人生感想。
扁豆还小，这个年龄有点儿压力不是坏事。
感慨这孩子好懂事啊。我要是家长，可能会看得严点儿，给孩子减减压。

我觉得你真是挺敏感的，总觉得大家在质疑你的决定一样，其实谁有你那个闲工夫管你
儿子去哪个学校或者将来成为什么样的人呢。你在公共论坛分享信息，我们看到不明白
的随便问问，不明白有什么不尊重你的。

就事论事，这样的统计有个selection bias的问题，就是你没法看出来这些人的成功是
因为学校本身的招生门槛高呢，还是因为学生在该学校里学得更好。虽然我本人也算读
的好学校，但是我一直有这样的疑惑，就是有没有统计的证据表明对于有能力被所谓好
学校录取的人而言，该学校的教育更有效（无论哪个标准）呢？版上肯定有搞教育研究
的望能解惑。

嗯，当然。对于大学而言的确有统计所谓名校的毕业出来平均收入高，所以我才有这个

TJ是VA的Thomas Jefferson High么?
我在bay area,这里没有magnet school,但是我觉得这里的一线高中的top student也不
比TJ的差,反而学生的能力更多元一些,每年在academic和各种特长上展露头角的很多都
是湾区的孩子.所以我觉得对孩子而言挖掘出他的特长才是最重要的,但是如果去了TJ这
样的学校,恐怕就比较早的锁定到一个大方向上了吧.

扁豆是很有天赋的孩子，他的才气只要稍微给点环境就可以表现出来，不是推就能推出
来的，所谓三岁看老。看过扁豆画，他的画很能触动观者的内心，燃起共鸣，即使看画
者没有任何绘画背景。
的确，他这个年龄同年龄的同学影响很大，所谓志同道合。不过十几岁的孩子能说出这
么成熟有哲理慎重的话，更多的是让人心痛，很多孩子还在傻玩呢，也许后者更开心。
当然开心不代表成功，成功也不代表开心，肯定各有得失。

孩子知道承担责任了，其实比考上什么高中更值得庆祝。
就象我看到儿子和各个族裔的同学都玩得倍儿开心，知道儿子的社交良好，比他考试满
分更让我欣慰。
