If you want use for 3-5 years, suggestion will be buy a decent enclosure and
replace hard drives when you feel lack of storage / speed.
When I read your title of luxury, I thought you want some gold / platinum en
closure with embedded diamonds...

consider SATA III, since you want use it for 3+ years.

If you use file server plus infiniband set up, it's not bad at all. But that
will be a big project and overy your current budget.

1. Wait for a while for USB 3.0 falls into a reasonable price.
2. Get a better raid controller - you will suffer when it rebuilds. A decent
raid controller by itself will cost $300+.

File server plus gigbits router (wired connection, of course). It is
pretty fast and the bottleneck is at the hard drive speed, I think.

Gigabyte is not so good. In good condition it reaches 90-100MBps, which is s
lower than hard drive, sequential read is at 200MB, with parallel RAID readi
ng it is even faster.
You need infiniband, at the rate of 10/20/40G, which put the bottle neck on
hard drive.
Infiniband cost $300-600 per PCI-Ex8 card. A cable cost 20-80 depends on len
gth and port. The switch cost several thousands.
