Not necessary, because it does not view as an independent letter.
I used Post-Doc adviser letter, and letters from other Professors/industry
professionals.
If you have had a bad experience with the PhD adviser. Then don't bother
asking for the ref. letter.

I didn't used PhD adviser letter. In fact, she do not provide any reference
letter to anyone work in her lab.
A bad experience for me to work for her during PhD phase. Anyone (everyone
graduated with PhD or Post docs) from her lab also had extremely bad
experience with her.

主要是看到有个律师说老板的还比较重要，移民官虽然认为不是独立的但是于情理上讲
还是有个老板的比较好，所以在考虑要不要。看来先不要了
