Once you find a tenure-track AP job, the tenure clock starts to go backward...you will be evaluated annually or biannually until you are promoted to associated professor
that is not the end. You can always step down to lower tier university or other same level univer sities, it's just another round of looking for jobs. Many people move to other jobs before tenure promotion for various reasons, it is not such a big deal, nor the end of the world.
