I am considering a research AP position with a univ, the position is
supposed to start in January.
However I just found myself pregnant, baby due in May.
I checked the univ's policy on maternity leave, it says "full-time employees
with at least 6 month continuous employment are eligible for 30 days of
maternity leave".
Does this mean, if I start working for the university in January, I won't be
able to take any leave?
The company I work now allows up to 3 months of leave under "short term
disability".
Should I ask the univ. to delay my employment until August?
Do I ask before or after signing the contract with the university?

情况很特殊,第一个OPT 10月17日结束,早在7月就申请了17个月的extension,毫无问
题的case。 8月底收到RFE,说雇主的E-verify号码不对,问了HR,提交一个号码,没
想到补充提交的号码又错了,完全是HR把数字看错。10月23日(12个月OPT已经过期,
本来由于OPT extension pending期间180天合法工作),整个申请denial,由于10月17
日已过,马上失去工作资格。OPT结束60天的grace period将于12月14日结束。现在雇
主承认了自己错误,下周争取早点开始Motion to reopen。
现在的问题是,Motion to reopen的processing time可能长至90天,但是合法身份在
约45天后(12/14)就过期。请问各位老师motion to reopen的pending 期是否可以算
做这同一个OPT extension 申请的pending期?也就是说,如果motion to reopen只要
启动了,在结果下来之前,根据下面的条款,我就可以保持合法身份而不需再12月14之
前出境?
”If their post-completion OPT expires while the 17-month extension
application is pending, students who timely filed their STEM extension
applications with USCIS will receive an extension of employment
authorization after their current employment authorization expires, but for
no more than 180 days. “
另外,现在申请H1B并非选项。

在本版看到过有人推荐过一个电子杂志网站的链接,有国家地理,时代周刊等。现在找
了很久也没找到。我记得通过那个链接连过去正好是Playboy的杂志,所以那ID还说了
句有限制级的。有知道的能否告知谢谢。

You are right: if you start in Jan, you are not eligible to take the 30 day
paid leave. If I were you, I would try to postpone the start date at the U.
You still have three months to recover before Aug/Sep.

Human resource generally follows those rules strictly. They really count
days and mark them down. You'd better negotiate it with your supervisor.
