Just called a friend a few minutes ago, who returned to Nanjing in 2005 and is now a full professor and Ph.D. supervisor. I asked him about salary level. I did not want to be too direct. So I asked if it is above or below 10k Chinese yuans/month. My friend said that it is below 10k. And it barely touches 10k for most professors of his rank even after all income sources combined.
My friend is in biomedical research area.

Ok, my friend said that your salary can be considerably higher if you are a
Chanjiang professor or part of the "thousand people" plan.
