Yao was terminated on May 14th 10.
Sent to my from the vice president of NIU.
Only one sentence in the email
The actual words used are "... was terminated on ..."
My conjecture is wrong. It looks like that he was not convicted.

I feel terrible for digging into this...
Initially, I thought this is fXXking gold of Ba Gua!
High rank professor was a jailbird...
Now it looks like that there is considerable probability that he wasn't even
convicted!

You are right. But convicting a person is very hard in US.
In Yao's case, he may have made a deal with the prosector or the prosector
thought they do not have a strong case. However, he must be somewhat guilty
otherwise he should not accept the dismissal by the university. Dismissing a
tenured faculty member is rare and difficult unless the school has
something. In US, you can accuse and sue anybody or any organization for
anything. If Yao feels he was wronged, he can sue the university at no time.
Usually an individual is in a better position than a public organization
such as a school because it is extremely careful about their fame and it has
more meat than an individual that an attorney loves to pursue.
