Yes. A simple 'tcpdump/windump' command in the router or somewhere
with a hub can see all you emails and attachments.
By the way, your gmail password should be ok since you use https to
login.
You can use a vpn to prevent that. For example, setup a server at home with
openvpn. Connect your laptop to your home server with openvpn from your
company. Setup the routing table so the default route is your openvpn
interface. Now all your web traffic including gmail, mitbbs or whatever are
encrypted.

although the employer can find out your private username/password, but if
they use it to read access your personal mail, then this act itself is
illegal or even criminal.
