encouraged by dontcare's posts.. i gathered some courage to write
about my tiny company as well :)
it started about 1.5 years ago when a company was looking to outsource
their cd replication.. and i had a lot of time to kill at that time
so i called them up and said i have the connections in china to help
them do this.. they wanted to check my history and customer references,

neither of which i have.. so instead of lying to them and making up
stories, i told them that i am brand new but i am a straight-up guy
and honesty is the most important thing in my business life.. and i
offered them a sweet deal: if they don't like the CDs i made for them,
i will charge them nothing.
long and behold, it took almost 5 months to get the first trial order
completed. lots of newbie mistakes made by me, but eventually i came
thru and won their trust. i only made 300 bucks for this deal (if count
my trip back to china to get things straightened out, i would have
lost money), but at least it's a good start.
then more orders followed, and i have been profitable on every order.
some more, some less. i made a lot of cold calls as well, but not
very successful. got a couple of clients but the orders are more
one-off deals and not recurring business. but anyway, since it's
just part time for me, i didn't spend too much time into it because
of all the other things i am doing besides my full job (ebay retailing,
for example).
i branched into book publishing as well. and quickly found a customer
who was willing to give me a try. the problem is that i'm facing a
very tough competitor whose price is incredibly low.. in order to
be competitive on price i had to go to a "village-enterprise" in china.
and the quality didn't really measure up to expetations. i have since
replaced them and gone to a top-notch supplier, but the customer is
already lost :( so hopefully i can find another one (or more) this
year..
new year's resolution: expand my current business, and look for potentials
in becoming a distributor/wholesaler. double my revenue (and profit)
on all businesses i do.
if anyone is interested on working together, or if you have leads,
i welcome you to contact me thru this bbs. (I'm in the bay area
by the way)
thanks.. hope that's somewhat useful :)
