More Americans shopped this Black Friday weekend than during last year's and
spent more on average, an
encouraging sign in the uncertain holiday season.
Roughly 212 million shoppers visited a store or a website over the Black
Friday weekend, an increase of
8.7%, according to the National Retail Federation. The average shopper spent
$365.34, up 6.4%, the
Washington-based foundation said.
The NRF estimated that total spending for the Black Friday period, which
includes Thursday, Friday,
Saturday and projected figures for Sunday, will reach $45 billion. The
foundation's survey polled 4,306
people from Thursday through Saturday.
Roughly 14% of consumers bought jewelry, up from 12% last year. Gift-card
purchases increased to 25%
from 22%. The shares for clothing, toys and book also rose.
The percentage of consumers buying consumer electronics, typically a staple
of the weekend, was
essentially flat.
Despite the rosier tone of the overall results, the NRF was cautious. "It
was the consumers' search for deals
and bargains that drove the weekend traffic, rather than their confidence in
the economy," Phil Rist,
executive vice president of BIGresearch, which conducted the survey, said in
a prepared statement.
Retail traffic monitor ShopperTrak on Saturday said sales on Black Friday
itself rose only slightly from a year
ago, partly because of discounts offered earlier in November and because of
online-only promotions.
Sales increased 0.3% to $10.7 billion, according to ShopperTrak, which
installs monitoring devices in stores
to gauge traffic. Traffic rose 2.2%, the company said.
