I bought a stock on April 1st. The broker system sent me a message where it
says the settlement date is April 6th. Should I do something on that day? I
used market order.

你这都没弄懂，你还买股票啊？
Market order是市场价，有人出多少买，就多少。如果交易量不大的股票，或者你卖的
量大，价格有可能会让你很失望。

The price you bought will normally not change. The price you bought could
change only if something big took place at the moment the order was executed
, for example, you bought XYZ at $1 a share minutes before XYZ goes back to
normal price like $36 a share.
Equity trades take 3 business days to settle down.
The only way the 3 business day settle down will affect you is you trade too
often in IRA accounts and other smaller than $25,000 accounts.
In your IRA account, you can use the money that is not settled to buy new
positions.
However, you will violate free ride rule if you sell those positions when
the money was still not settled.

Free riding (also known as Freeriding or Free-riding) is a term used in the
stock-trading world to describe the practice of buying shares or other
securities without actually having the capital to cover the trade. This is
possible when recently bought or sold shares are unsettled, and therefore
have not been paid for.
Since stock transactions usually settle after three business days, a crafty
trader can buy a stock and sell it the following day (or the same day),
without ever having sufficient funds in the account.

The Securities and Exchange Commission states "In a cash account, you must
pay for the purchase of a stock before you can sell it. If you buy and sell
a stock before paying for it, you are free riding, which violates the credit
extension provisions of the Federal Reserve Board. If you free ride, your
broker must freeze your account for 90 days."
If someone is trading rapidly and using all the cash available in the
account to buy and sell, that person will likely get a "freeriding violation
." Freeriding is subject to a mandatory 90-day cash-up-front restriction.
Clients can still trade, but they lose the ability to make purchases with
unsettled sale proceeds.
