Steinman managed to extend his own life 3.5 years beyond the few months that
most pancreatic patients live by his own research. (Steve Jobs had a
different form of pancreatic cancer).
"Dr. Steinman was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer four years ago, and his
life was extended using a dendritic-cell based immunotherapy of his own
design, according to Rockefeller University."
Dr. Steinman, born in 1943 in Montreal, co-discovered in 1973 a new cell
type he called the dendritic cell. He showed that these could activate T
cells, a type of cell that plays an important role in helping the body build
an immunologic memory against different substances.
Rockefeller University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne, described the
awarding of the Nobel prize to Dr. Steinman as "bittersweet." He noted that
the late scientist's findings had "led to innovative new approaches in how
we treat cancer, infectious diseases and disorders of the immune system."
