Alpha Natural swings to a loss, revenue up
(7:38 AM ET) NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Alpha Natural Resources ANR +3.18
% on Friday said it swung to a fourth-quarter loss of $733.3 million, or $3
.34 a share, from income of $10.8 million, or 9 cents a share, in the year-
ago period. The Bristol, Va., coal producer's adjusted loss in the latest
quarter totaled 7 cents a share, after breaking out a non-cash, $745 million
goodwill impairment related to its purchase of Massey Energy, and other
items. Revenue more than doubled to $2.1 billion, including about $739
million from the former Massey operations. Wall Street analysts expected
Alpha Natural to earn 27 cents a share on revenue of $2.16 billion,
according to a survey by FactSet Research.
