Unlocked iPhone 5 price “slides,” but expensive than Verizon, Sprint and
AT&T
October 19, 2012, 9:52 A.M., Friday, New York local time — Ahead of the
official US launch of the unlocked iPhone 5, third-party retailers’ iPhone
5 unlocked variants are now slightly cheaper, but still expensive compared
to rival phones running Android.
Note: The official unlocked iPhone 5 is not available yet (models coming
from Apple). Apple is expected to offer unlocked iPhone 5 in store and
online starting next month, similar to last year’s iPhone 4S, with an entry
-level price tag of $649 for the 16GB model.
According to sources from third-party online retailers, the new Apple iPhone
5 is slightly cheaper compared to prices from last week’s list. The top-
end model, the 64GB iPhone 5, features an asking price of $1,300 to $1,380,
down from last week’s $1,450 to $1,500. Meanwhile, the cheapest iPhone 5
unlocked available online is the 16GB model with a current price tag of $1,
020 to $1,000, down from $1,100 last week. Also, the 32GB iPhone 5 unlocked
is $150 cheaper today compared to its asking price seven days ago.
Apple, if the same cycle is to believed, is set to sell unlocked iPhone 5
phones starting next month with the official asking price of $649 for the
16GB model, $749 for the 32GB and 64GB variant with $849. After the launch
of the unlocked iPhone 5 on Apple.com and Apple stores in United States,
third-party retailers are expected to lower their prices to lure customers.
The iPhone 5 is expensive as of today because of the rumored underwhelming
supply. Next month, Apple’s partners are expected to ship more units to
meet the growing demand.
Analysts believe that demand for the iPhone 5 is outpacing the current
supply, but Apple will start meeting the demand before the end of this year.
Apple said the iPhone 5 is the “most successful” iPhone yet with more
than 5 million sales for its first weekend sales. Additional “millions”
are expected to follow before the start of 2013 as carriers (Verizon
Wireless, Sprint, AT&T) in United States add supply.
The iPhone 5 is powered by a dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, features a larger
4-inch Retina display, thinner body and the phone is lighter than the
previous generation. The iPhone 5 includes an 8-megapixel primary camera,
the new HD Facetime front-facing camera and iOS 6 mobile operating system
out of the box.
