Macy's Raises View on Second-Half Same-Store Sales Growth

By Tess Stynes
Macy's Inc. (M) raised its same-store sales-growth forecast for the second
half of the year as the department-store operator's preliminary third-
quarter sales topped expectations.
Shares were up 3.5% at $39.40 in premarket trading. Through Wednesday's
close, the stock is up 18% this year.
"Business was strong in October, and we delivered a solid performance in the
third quarter," Chairman and Chief Executive Terry J. Lundgren said.
The company said it now expects same-store sales will improve about 4% in
the second half, compared with its prior estimate for 3.7% growth.
Macy's anticipates third-quarter total sales of $6.08 billion and same-store
sales growth of 3.7%. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters recently projected
revenue growth of 3% to $6.05 billion.
During October, the retailer's same-store sales were up 3.6%, topping
analysts' estimates for a rise of 3.1%.
The company said more than 200 Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores were closed
from periods ranging from a few hours to a number of days owing to Hurricane
Sandy, but the retailer expects to make up some or most of the lost sales
during the rest of the fourth quarter.
In August, Macy's said its second-quarter profit surged 16% as revenue, and
particularly online sales, improved. The company is set to release its third
-quarter financial results Nov. 7.
