SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Mikhail Kalashnikov, the designer of the
world's most popular firearm, the AK-47 assault rifle, has died at age 94,
according to media reports. The cause of death was unknown. Kalashnikov had
been hospitalized for the past month in Udmurtia Republic, Russia, according
to reports. A favorite of armies, terrorists and guerrilla soldiers, more
than 100 million AK-47 firearms are estimated to be in circulation.
Kalashnikov was quoted as saying in 2007, "I sleep well. It's the
politicians who are to blame for failing to come to an agreement and
resorting to violence."
