The U.S. economy is on track for 3% growth this year, said former Federal
Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, in his first speech since he left office in
January.
“There are some signs that recoveries are picking up” in the G-7 countries
, Bernanke told a banker’s conference in Abu Dhabi, according to Bloomberg.
“You’re seeing some strength in Japan with Abenomics, you’re seeing a
somewhat stronger U.S. economy,” he added.
Bernanke also reflected on the financial crisis in his remarks, which he
called “very, very dark hours.” He said the Fed could have done more to
combat the downturn, Reuters reported.
The former Fed chairman received a $250,000 speaking fee, Reuters said,
citing unidentified sources. Bernanke will speak on Wednesday in South
Africa and Friday in Houston, Bloomberg reported.
