OAKLAND -- A 31-year-old San Jose man was identified as the person shot to
death Wednesday afternoon at an East Oakland apartment that police said was
an unlicensed massage parlor where prostitution also occurred.
Police said Jian Jin had been at the apartment, part of a fourplex in the
2000 block of 16th Avenue, for a short time before two men forced their way
in, robbed a doorman and shot Jin.
Police said they are still not sure why Jin was there or why he was shot,
and investigators are trying to determine if anything was taken from him.
The suspects, at least one armed with a gun, forced their way in about 2:30
p.m. Besides the doorman and Jin, other people were present including some
women masseuses, authorities said.
No one else was hurt and the doorman lost some personal items to the
suspects, who fled on foot.
Police had to use interpreters to talk to the doorman and others present,
who spoke several languages including Cantonese. Police said the apartment
had tables and other items consistent with a massage business but that they
also have information that prostitution was happening there as well.
Police said they believe the business had been housed there for at least two
months, if not longer. It was unclear who owned the apartment complex.
Before Wednesday there had been no reports of violence or other illegal acts
there, police said.
Jin's killing was the city's 10th homicide of the year. Last year
