Some said "Sell in May and go away", which I did not believe. In fact, SPY
ended the
month slightly up (+1.2%), and my portfolio was up 15% thanks to a couple
of
successful bets.
The largest win was my shorts on WFM. I held a long position prior to
earning release in
Feb, which did well (+5%) after release. However, the stock entered a
downward spiral
since then. I determined that the stock won't do well on May 6 release, and
entered a big
short position. ( Stock down 10% after release)
Other successful bets include short on MAR, increasing position size on APPL
and GILD.
Current position on APPL is a bit large, but I believe there are plenty of
room up so will
hold on it. My GILD and TSLA positions finally made some material profit.
The biggest loss came from the call position on TFM, on which i lost $5K.
Also lost some
on my put position on ROST. I had the right judgement on the direction of
underlying
movement, but chose the wrong option.
Lesson: My trading operation on TSLA/GILD is proven to be unsuccessful. My
judgement
on GILD and TSLA's medium term trend was correct, but when I tried to time
the market
and play short-term mean-reversion pattern, I ended up missing the main
trend.
