After China Hits Back With Tariffs, Trump Says He’ll Meet With Xi

President Trump said he plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping next
month when he travels to Japan for a summit, in comments hours after
Beijing increased tariffs on $60 billion of U.S. goods in the latest
escalation of the trade fight.
The retaliation from China came in response to the U.S.’s move Friday to
raise tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese products. Mr. Trump, who last week
threatened to slap tariffs on more than $300 billion of other Chinese
products, said on Monday that he hasn’t made a decision about whether to
proceed with the additional action.
Mr. Trump argued that regardless of whether his administration is able to
reach a deal, the U.S. is “in a great position now” due to strong economic
growth. He also blamed the Chinese for the failure to reach an agreement
last week. “We had a deal with China and it was 95% there,” but then the
Chinese reneged, he said.
On the potential additional tariffs, Mr. Trump said: “We have another $325
billion that we can do, if we decided to do it.…I haven’t made that
decision yet.”
