it's controlled by your .bst file. and optional field doesn't mean it won't get displayed. it means that it doesn't have to be present.

You missed my point. By default, plainnat.bst displays "url" and "doi" fields, which is not consistent with that document says.That's my point. Of course, "optional" means it will be displayed if it exists. But "optional " doesn't include "url" and "doi" fields according to that web page, but actually every .bst file in natbib package displays "url" and "doi". This is my point, not that I do not understand what means "optional".

isn't it natbib's doc? I read the plainnat.bst at least.
