Is it good? what do you like about it?
Does it suck? what do you hate about it?
Is it just another Unix? So why is Solaris so much more
popular?

AIX usually runs in the IBM RS/AS computer.
AIX is UNIX os but changed to fit for it hardware.
It is not so popular as SUN OS because RS is too expensive.
Some time, when you book a RS/AS computer and you will get one copy of AIX.
DeepBlue(深蓝) is hundreds of RS/6000 set as cluster.
In my experience, AIX is really good in business and database. Powerful
and safe and will run for years not down.
But AS/390, RS/6000... are very expensive, usually cost $500000--$1000000.

Thanks for your opinion. A few clarifications, AIX run on
IBM pSeries servers (used to be call RS/6000). AS/400, or
the new iSeries, doesn't run AIX, it runs OS/400.
I also don't understand how SUNOS or Solaris get to be so
popular. When doing head to head comparison, IBM's Unix
server can alway beat Sun's server in price (yes price) and
performance. That's why I am puzzled.
If someone can really tell me why people don't like AIX or
RS/6000(this can be proved by Sun's market share), please
let m

i used one clustered RS6000 (8CPUs) in China Telecom.
for that 4 RS6000, IBM offerred 30 PCs.
I was impressed by one 3-D game installed.

You have to understand what "performance" really means. Number of arithmethic
operations per second? Except computational scientists who cares. Ease of
administration and interoperatibility are more important for most people.
When you compare two systems, you should ask: does it have all the software
I want? Does it support the popular network services? Is it easy to
maintain? Blah, blah. If the answers are no, then what "performance" it has
is nothing but shit.

performance is not the only issue, sometimes not even the
biggest issue, when people considering purchasing servers.
It's just one easily measurable number, so people use it as
a relative reference. Also, performance means more than just
the ability of doing number crunching. I/O speed, among
others, also matters a lot in system performance. So people
developed a whole methodology of doing benchmarking, using
environmnet as close to real life as possibl

First of all, I had very limited experience with AIX, and as far as I know
there is no AIX in my department.
Vendors tend to play magic with numbers. Benchmarks depend on
too many things. I don't know why you said IBM beats Sun in performance,
and honestly, I doubt it has any real sense.
You can think so. People always write/test software for mainstream
systems. If I write a software, I will certainly test it on Solaris
and Linux, and may never take the effort to port it to AIX or IRIX.

My play with AIX is really a long shot, but I have a few
words to shoot.
1. Performance is not an issue when you try to compare Unix
OS, as far as I can see. It is more related to hardware.
Once I read a benchmark from HP site about how RISC beat
down Sparc. I remember seems like 1 PA-RISC 8600 (let's say
L class) equal to 2 Sparc IIi 400M (let's say E250).
Meanwhile, 1 PA-RISC is probably more than twice expensive
than 2 Sparc in E250. What is the catch? If you have a
E6500 with 16 CPU whic

Right, the whole industry has this love-hate relationshop
with benchmarks. Everyone downplays the importance of
benchmark, and yet everyone uses it. There are a set of de
facto benchmarks that are typically viewed as industry
standard. Like TPC-C for OLTP, and VolanoMark for Java
performance. Actually Wintel platform always leads the
chart. But which business will bet their core operation on
Wintel?

I don't think so. Even a path difference can stop you from compiling a
software, and the difference among Unix platforms is not trivial. Think about
open source developpers. How many of them use Solaris and how many use AIX.
There is no market demand on them, while on Unix what we use daily is almost
always open source software.
Since I never administered AIX machines, I can't say you are wrong.
But there is a HP-UX and SGI in my department, and I have to say they
have given us too much hea

I agree with you. If you use Solaris as the norm, then
anything different will be perceived as troublesome and bad.
However this is not what we are discussing, right? From an
SA point of view, only things AIX is significantly different
from Solaris are System Mgmt tools, and File systems. Looks
like we all agree Linux is the future, and how do you see
Sun's embrassing stance on Linux and open source movement?
A side question, I used to ask on Linux board. How is Linux
being received in the acad

Solaris is pretty much gone from schools, there used to be a time when
computer lab machines are all sparcs, now you see all those PII, PIII
Wintel machines donated by Intel and/or Microsoft instead.
Linux is extremely popular in academia, the growing trend is
school admins start installing nt/linux dual boots in labs :P
Supercomputing facilities are still being dominated by AIX though,
the growing trend is they are being replaced by linux or NT clusters.

Linux is an exception. It's free, and running on all platforms, including
cheap PCs.
