I heard md5 is good for checking the integrity of unix file. Does anyone know
where I can download it? I tried some from google search, but it works well
for PC not for Unix.
By the way, does it mean the whole software is definitely still good if those
files are found to be good by md5?

it's everywhere.
try GNU PG.
also search in newsgroup like sci.crypt.

if you want it for solaris, you can get it from
www.sunfreeware.com.
if you have linux, just go to rpmfind.net to find a rpm
don't know about other flavor of unix. probably find the
source code and compile it.

md5sum from gnu textutil
it is said to be impossible (with current hardware) to get a piece of text as
output, whose md5sum is given as input. that is, hackers (bad guys) can't
modify your files while keep the same md5 signature.

hehe, hacker can modify your file, generate new MD5 checksum, and
put the new checksum with the modified file.
Adding certified digital signature is the ultimate solution for the
problem.

i am assuming we can save the md5 checksums and the md5sum program offline.
what should the hacker do?
