If you were given an IP. Then in general, you don't know. If is a domain name, it is possible to use nslookup to figure out if it is fake name if DNS says it does not exist. If you read news, Net Finder by VeriSign is defeating this mechanism by always respond it and redirect any traffic of mispelled .com and .net address to its advertisement server. Fortunately, it is temporarily down for now. This service is very bad also because it looks as if VeriSign owns all the domain names even if the
