ask other assistant professors in the hiring department about their typical teaching loads. If theirs are 2:2 too, there really is no room to negotiate. Even at a research university, teaching (instead of research) is your primary commitment to the department. good luck

As far as I know, for engineering, 2+1 is normal, except at top schools which are more likely to be 1+1. It is almost not negotiable, except that most schools give starting faculty reduced teaching load initially. Some for one or two years, some until tenure.

Yes, I was thinking about asking for a reduction of teaching in the first couple of years - is it appropriate? I'll probably join the department so I don't want to leave a bad impression to my future colleagues.
