The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering at Auburn University invites
applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Polymer and
Fiber Engineering. The initial appointment is for a five-year term,
renewable for consecutive terms. The Department Chair is responsible for
providing leadership in research, teaching, and outreach. Successful
candidates must possess a distinguished record of teaching, research, and
scholarship, as well as excellent interpersonal skills and leadership
qualities.
Consistent with the goals of the College of Engineering, applicants must
articulate a clear vision and demonstrate the qualities necessary to lead a
dynamic faculty toward a higher level of excellence. The Department Chair
must have the academic and professional qualifications to be awarded tenure
at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. A substantial record of
research and scholarly achievements with a national reputation is essential
along with a strong commitment to teaching and service. The successful
candidate should have a record of research excellence and demonstrated
leadership in an area that enhances current and emerging strengths of the
department including (but not limited to): advanced polymeric systems and
processing, composites, nanostructured materials, and biomedical materials.
Research approaches that integrate modeling and experimentation are highly
desired.
The Department of Polymer and Fiber Engineering has 9 faculty members and
offers undergraduate degrees in two tracks: polymer and fiber, as well as M.
S. and Ph.D. degrees in polymer and fiber engineering. The Polymer and Fiber
Engineering faculty have a strong track-record of scholarly research and
publications.
Auburn University’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, the largest and
most prestigious engineering program in Alabama, produces more than one
third of the state’s engineering graduates according to the American
Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The U.S. News & World Report
recently ranked the college 30th among public universities offering doctoral
programs, while its graduate programs were ranked 40th among public
universities. With a dynamic and innovative research program, as well as 12
undergraduate and 10 graduate degree granting programs, the college is
recognized as a significant contributor to the region’s economic
development and industrial competitiveness.
Auburn University is one of the nation's premier land, sea, and space grant
institutions. In the 2012 edition of U.S. News & World Report ratings of
undergraduate programs, it was ranked 37th among public universities. Auburn
is a high research activity institution, offering Bachelor's, First
Professional, Master's, Educational Specialist, and Doctor's degrees. Auburn
University has 1,196 full-time faculty, 159 part-time faculty, and enrolls
25,469 students from all fifty states and approximately 81 countries,
including 20,446 undergraduates, 4,005 graduate students, and 1,018 first
professional students.
The city of Auburn is a thriving intellectual community located
approximately 100 miles southwest of Atlanta, GA and southeast of Birmingham
, AL, and is about 50 miles from the State Capitol of Montgomery. The
Auburn-Opelika metropolitan statistical area has a population of 140,000,
excellent public school systems, a regional medical center, and the
distinction of being recognized as one of the “best small towns in America.
” CNNMoney.com named Auburn as one of the top 100 "Best Places to Live"
for 2012.
Review of applications will begin on January 15, 2013 and continue until the
position is filled. The candidate selected for this position must be able
to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time
appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the
proposed term of employment.
