In many years, I am thinking about what is 聪明. What is it the definition
of 聪明 ?
When I was young, some people claimed that this boy or that boy was 聪明,
and then I was wondering why he was 聪明 and why people thought him as 聪明.
I
found that those who were identified as 聪明 were mostly fast-thinking with
fast ideas. But sometime, I was confused by some facts: for example, one of
my classmates who was not treated as 聪明, but was very capable of solving
difficult math questions (such as Olympic Math competition): I was thinking
whether he was 聪明 or not.
After many years, I observed many children in China or USA. I have some new
knowledge of 聪明. I believe that there are all different kinds of 聪明.
Some children were said to be 聪明 due to fast-thinking with fast ideas.
Some children were said to be 聪明 due to their language ability.
Some children were said to be 聪明 due to their logical ability.
Some children were said to be 聪明 due to their ability to handle personal
relationship.
Some children were said to be 聪明 due to their ability in Math.
Some children were said to be 聪明 due to their ability in arts.
Etc.
Some children were said to be not 聪明 in one aspect, but be treated as 聪明
in another aspect.
Therefore, when people are talking about 聪明, they should give a definition
of 聪明, i.e., in which aspect.
Also, ability vs. 聪明. Ability can be learned and trained. Whether 聪明 can
be learned or trained ? Maybe yes.
