How are Complaints Made?
The IAB office is open for complaints, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A
complaint may be made in person at any Police Department facility or by
telephone at (212) 741-8401, as well as, by regular mail and E-mail to IAB @
NYPD.Org.
When making the complaint please include your name, address, telephone
number and as much specific information about the subject of your complaint
as possible. Please include the following information if known: The officer'
s name and shield and a brief description of any police car number or
license plate number, what happened, where it happened, who was involved,
how and why.
When a citizen lodges a complaint against a member of the New York City
Police Department, the complaint goes to the Internal Affairs Bureau,
located at 315 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10013. There, an investigative
management team assesses the complaint. After their review, the complaint is
sent to the respective investigative unit for the investigation. In those
cases where the complaint is made at other than the Internal Affairs Bureau,
the complaint is forwarded to the Internal Affairs Bureau by that facility.
Complaints against an officer should contain your name, address, and
contact information so that the investigator may reach you for an interview.
How are Complaints Investigated?
Internal Affairs Bureau investigators will conduct a thorough investigation
of your complaint. Witnesses and officers will be contacted and asked to
give statements. Records and other evidence will be collected and analyzed.
Every effort is made to collect all data pertaining to your complaint so
that an impartial conclusion may be reached.
What happens When a Complaint is Found to be True?
When the investigation of a complaint reveals that the charges are true and
should be sustained against a police officer, the Police Commissioner may
take one of the following actions, depending on the nature of the violation.
Reprimand the employee.
Loss of vacation time.
Suspend the employee without pay.
Demote the employee.
Terminate the employee.
