Dear Mr. Brown,
My name is Xiangxi Liu, a DOL Wage and Hour investigator who work on the
other end of your Columbus office hall way.
This email is regarding the negative influences that Jimmy Kimmel’s recent
Kid’s Table Show on Oct 16th 2013 impacted to my family and local Chinese
society.
During the Kids-Table segment of Jimmy Kimmel Live show on Oct 16 2013, one
of the children proposed 'kill everyone in China (to avoid paying the US
national debt)'. The host, Jimmy Kimmel, encouraged this as 'an interesting
idea' and used condescending followups 'should we allow the Chinese to live?"
The show was recorded and aired later that night. The content of the show
greatly harmed the feeling of the Chinese American community, who
unanimously expressed their outrage in recent days.
Since the show aired, multiple incidents were reported via internet that
Asian kids (not only Chinese kids but other Asian kids from different ethic
groups) are targeted for hate speech as such :"kill you all Chinese" at
different schools. And their parents are deeply upset by these hate speech
and worried about their children's safety.
As adult, we easily understand this show is merely an unfunny joke. But
Jimmy Kimmel's action of disregarding clearly sends a wrong signal to those
who watched this show, especially children.
If joke such as "How do we solve the immigration problem?", "Kill every one
in Mexico and South Amierca","That is a very interesting idea, should we
allow Hispanic people to live?" can't be a joke on a kid show, then none of
the ethic group shouldn't become similar target for any reason. This still
disregarding teaching killing to our children is wrong at beginning, didn't
we have enough school shooting yet? We all know that for those people with
hate crime mindset, "killing everyone in China" is nearly impossible but "
killing some Chinese/Asian next to me" is easy. Therefore, Those hate
promoting action should not be tolerated in any form or circumstances. Not
to Chinese, not to any ethnic group.
In the past, many innocent people like Vincent Chin already cost their lives
to those blind hatred toward Asian Americans. And the shadow of Chinese
exclusion act 1882 still hangs in our law directory alone with many Asian
Americans' memories. Would this show bring back many painful experiences in
the past? It's still to be determined.
Therefore, as an Ohioan voter, a second generation of immigrant, an US Army
veteran who fought for this country for many years, and a man who may become
a father in the near coming future, I wish my children will live in a
nation where they will not be judged by the country of their origin or the
color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
And I wish you, Mr. Brown, join in your Asian colleagues in congress (
congressman Mike Honda and congresswomen Judy Chu), to assist voice of
Chinese communities to be heard by Jimmy Kimmel and ABC (we clearly know
every show is scripted, recorded and edited by the TV channel, so please don
't give me excuse such as "that's unexpected"), and force the TV channel to
issue a formal apology (not those cheap "I'm sorry" in the show or in
letters address only to private person) toward all Asian communities and to
all Americans.
If Paula Dean lost her job due to her racial words in the past, Jimmy Kimmel
should be punished accordingly. Since Mr. Kimmel's case is even worse:
promoting racial hatred among children. The right of forgiveness should be
hold by those are impacted by the show.
Thank you for you time to read this email.
Wish you to have a great day.
Sincerely
Xiangxi Liu
