Ms. Luowei’s writing was indeed passable in that she did get her message across. However, a native speaker can immediately tell it was an article authored by a non-native English speaker. I have a 12-year old child, and I occasionally help her with her writing assignments. I know a 12-year old native English speaker would not fall for some of the minor problems in Ms. Luowei’s article. In my humble opinion, there is an element of over-politeness on the part of your native English speaker friend when he asserted that Ms. Luowei’s writing was “equivalent to maybe a 16-year old native”. With all due respect for Ms. Luowei and recognizing the fact that the English language is a living language that is widely used, and not just the monopoly of native speakers, let’s just look at some of the pitfalls that Ms. Luowei fell into aside from the obvious typos, for the purpose of awareness. Again, I am not criticizing anyone, and I wish Ms. Luowei all the best in particular and commend her compassion for providing useful suggestions. This is just a hypothetical linguistic exercise. 1. “It is no difference that you use a free layer the government assigned to you from a paid attorney.” Should be There is no difference whether you use a free lawyer the government assigned to you or a paid attorney. 2. “you can work out to avoid deportation.” Should be you can work out a plan to avoid deportation. 3. “for your life long time.” Should be for your life time. 4. “consult with your lawyer” Should be Consult your lawyer 5. “especially you are young” Should be especially since you are young
