USNews) in the most of the past 20 years. Come on. They are the American top
10, not necessarily the top 10 ranked by Chinese students. Social science,
professional schools have significant impact on the evaluation. Most Chinese
students are in nature science and engineering, of course, their top 10 is
not the same as that of Americans. Look at the school of social science, law
school, business school in Yale, Columbia, Duke and Chicago, they are among
the American best.

Yale, columbia, duke and chicago do have science and engineering, but not as
strong as those of some public schools. No one denies that. I mean they are
evaluated by the US people, based on their preference, their judgment. They
stay in top 10, because American people like to go and pay the tuition for
sports, legacy, social connection, and etc. So I just want to highlight they
are the tops by American people and American way, might not the Chinese
people and Chinese way.
I saw lots of Chinese scholars who come from science and engineering, but
they would like to send their kids to private schools, and professional
schools (medical, law and business). At least my advisor did that way. So...

研究生院根本就无所谓排名，只有专业排名有意义。
前面那位任何耶鲁连前10都进不了的，真是脑子进了铊了。caltech跟Yale比，真是笑
死人了。说的好像大学只有那几个工程和自然科学学科一样。

US NEWS 明确地分了本科和研究生院的排名。college ranking不等于我们中国人理解
的“大学排名”，因为后者国人一听就觉得包括了本科和研究生院。所以弄这么一个
list不标明是本科排名，要是弄到国内的媒体，只会误导国人。

in the past 20 years USNews always ranked Duke top 10, but rarely Cornell
and Berkeley. As mentioned by some friend, it is the rank for college.
Because the average (or median) CPA and Salary after graduation are heavily
weighted in the ranking system. No doubt, top private schools ranks higher
than top public schools. So Berkeley normally rank around no. 20. Cornell
locates in such a rural area. It is a good place to watch great falls, but
not easy for job hunting.

Dartmouth is somewhere legacy is very important. Did you watch the "gossip
girls"? Those who have strong family background seriously think of Dartmouth
as a good option.
I mean it is for college, not graduate school. It is not very relevant to
research. Also the weight of research between nature science and social
science in US is not the same as in China.

These are the major concern in the ranking system:
(1) Tuition
(2) Total enrollment
(3) acceptance rate
(4) Average freshman retention rate
(5) 6-year graduation rate
(6) Classes with under 20 students
(7) SAT/ACT 25th-75th percentile
Ha ha, I didn't see the median salary in half year after graduation. Maybe
it is only for law and business.
Dartmouth is someone with very low acceptance rate.

I guess the best school they mean is
(1) Tuition (High)
(2) Total enrollment (High)
(3) acceptance rate (low)
(4) Average freshman retention rate (High)
(5) 6-year graduation rate (High)
(6) Classes with under 20 students (High)
(7) SAT/ACT 25th-75th percentile (Low)
The "good" university USNews means is the one that many many people would go
, but only very small fraction could enter. It charges students very high
tuition, but students are willing to pay and stay (because of the expected
return after graduation). It needs students to be selective (high score) and
provides high quality service (class size).
If it considers salary, of course (High). Ha ha.

我实在是看不下去了，明显在一个没在学术界混过的人；UChicago如果是从学术，尤其
自然，社会文理科学，论文平均citation的角度是全美top5，Northwester是个工程学
校，大部分毕业都是进公司的，你孤陋寡闻。
